Handgun Check List
The reason for handgun evaluation is for student safety and to ensure the handgun is in good working order.
CHL Students
IF YOUR FIREARM FAILS THIS SAFETY CHECK, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE YOUR FIREARM DURING THE RANGE QUALIFICATION.
YOU THEN HAVE THE OPTION TO EITHER RENT A FIREARM OR RETURN AT A LATER TIME WITH A SAFE FIREARM TO COMPLETE THE RANGE QUALIFICATION.
Revolver:
Semi-Automatics:

YOU THEN HAVE THE OPTION TO EITHER RENT A FIREARM OR RETURN AT A LATER TIME WITH A SAFE FIREARM TO COMPLETE THE RANGE QUALIFICATION.
Revolver:
- Check for modifications that will may render handgun unsafe. example: check double single action function, unless the gun is a single action revolver.
- Check for push off. example: when hammer is cocked back, it can be pushed forward without pulling the trigger.
- Make sure cylinder opens and closes without binding. Cylinder should rotate freely with hammer half cocked.
- Check for excessive end-shake. example: cylinder cannot excessively move forward or backwards.
- Check to ensure cylinder locks up prior to the hammer falling. "Timing"
- Check firing pin to ensure it is not chipped or broken.
- Check sights
Semi-Automatics:
- Check for modifications that may render the handgun unsafe
- Are there safety's present? And are they working properly?
- If a de-cocking device is present, does it function properly?
- Single action semi-auto
- Does the hammer stay back with the slide is cycled
- Push off
- Does the magazine catch function properly?
- Does the slide cycle freely without binding?
- Check extractor and ejector
- Does handgun function both single and double action?
- Does the gun fire out of battery? example: pistol must not fire if slide is not locked forward
- Check sights
- example: front and rear sights
